History
The founder of Llechwed Quarry, John Whitehead Greaves, completed construction on Plas Weunydd in 1870. The property was built on an earlier agricultural dwelling called ‘Ty Crwn.’ John Whitehead Greaves heard about the slate in Gwynedd as he was travelling to America in 1830 and visited Wales on his return. Greaves started prospecting for slate, and in 1843 he went on to find ‘The Old Vein Slate’ and the booming slate business began. Following his success, the family built another house near the coastal town of Criccieth called ‘Bron Eifion’.
Plas Weunydd was Greaves’ main residence while working at Llechwedd Quarry. It continued as a cherished family home for many decades. Indeed, the father of one of the current directors lived in the house as a child. In the latter part of the 20th century, the house became the official mine office before being left empty for a few years. Refurbishment of the property commenced in 2019 and opened to the public as a hotel in April 2021. Plas Weunydd Hotel now stands at the heart of the North West Wales UNESCO World Heritage Site.
