EXPLORE THE HIDDEN GEMS OF ERYRI (SNOWDONIA) WITH OUR GUIDED MOUNTAIN WALKS
Love the idea of discovering secret waterfalls, breathtaking viewpoints, and little-known trails around Plas Weunydd? Well, you’re in luck! We’re teaming up with George from Snowdonia Adventure Activities to offer guided walks for Plas Weunydd guests that take you beyond the usual paths and into the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia)’s wild beauty.
We’ve secured an incredible opportunity for our guests to experience the best of Eryri (Snowdonia) with an expert guide for just £10 instead of £120.
To find out more, we had a chat with George. Read on for his insights, favourite spots, and why exploring Eryri on foot is an experience you won’t want to miss!
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background as a mountain leader?
I grew up in north Wales and I spent a lot of my childhood in the forests, in the mountains and down by the sea. Despite having always been interested in adventure sports and outdoor activities I never really expected to work in the outdoors though; I got lucky here! After university, I was a freelance cameraman but a chance encounter provided a door to the outdoor sector and in 2011 I started a small business called “Snowdonia Adventure Activities”. We specialise in guided outdoor activities including rock climbing, canyoning and kayaking and I really enjoy showing people the wilder parts of North Wales.
Do you have a favourite adventure or memorable experience from guiding in the mountains?
Too many to mention! I’ve had some great days climbing, memories I’ll keep forever! The more you experience the area, the more your knowledge and understanding of it expands. I feel a deep connection to the mountains of Eryri; the landscape, the history, the wildlife. I’ve been very fortunate to spend so much time outdoors surrounded by nature.
What kinds of activities and experiences can our guests expect from your guided adventures?
We’re flexible when it comes to what we will be doing; it all depends on the participants, the weather and peoples aspirations really.
How do you tailor the experience for different skill levels, from beginners to more experienced hikers?
Most of North Wales is pretty accessible to everyone, it’s a case of taking it steady and pacing yourself. The more exposed routes and scrambles do require a certain mental fortitude but physically it’s within most people’s capabilities. You don’t need to go anywhere wildly exciting to get off the beaten track and discover the secret parts of Eryri (Snowdonia).
Are there any hidden gems or special spots you love to take people to?
Many! Climbing takes you to all sorts of inaccessible areas but even staying on footpaths there are parts of the Moelwynion range that are loaded with history left behind by the slate mining industry; seeing this ancient archaeology brings the stories to life. The Rhinogydd mountains are rarely travelled and you can go all day without seeing anyone. Even the busy spots have a certain charm like Cwm Idwal and its amazingly accessible geologically diverse landscapes.
What advice do you have for guests to prepare for their adventure with you?
Wherever we end up going, guests are going to need a good pair of shoes, a good rain jacket, some warm layers, a small 25-40L rucksack and a picnic lunch.
A huge thanks to George for taking the time to chat with us! If you’ve ever thought about heading into the mountains with a pro, this is your chance, and for just £10 instead of the usual £120. It’s a great way to build confidence, pick up some tips, or simply enjoy a day out in incredible surroundings.
